During the 17th Century band samplers were worked to provide an easy method of laying down design ideas as printed patterns were virtually unobtainable. These early samplers were often produced by young women on behalf of professional or adult needlewomen. Many surviving examples of original 17th century band samplers have been found in extremely good condition as they were probably kept rolled and stored away from natural light when not being used.
